Tyler Z. Murtie
Founder/Licensed Funeral Director
Founded in 2016 by Tyler Zygmunt Murtie, Zygmunt-Murtie Funeral and Cremation Service provides a different, more celebratory feel to funeral services then a “traditional funeral home.”
The son of Marie Zygmunt Murtie, and the late Robert M. Murtie- Tyler, an area native graduated from Warwick Valley High School in 2006. He continued his education graduating from Hudson Valley Community College with an A.A.S. in Mortuary Science in 2008. Immediately following graduation Tyler joined the staff at the William M. Gagan Funeral Home Inc. and completed his state-mandated one year residency period serving the Pine Bush, NY community. Tyler still remains on staff at William M. Gagan to this day.
In 2010 Tyler went part time in Pine Bush and went to work for the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Homes serving Monticello and Ellenville.
In July of 2011 Tyler left his local comfort zone and went to work for Service Corporation International, a Houston Texas-based funeral conglomerate at a location in Rockland County-Spring Valley. Here he served over 350 Jewish-Faith families every year. Because of the corporation’s multiple locations in proximity to the New York/New Jersey boarder Tyler became New Jersey State Licensed in 2015. He later decided to return to private-owned, small-community funeral services.
In February of 2016 Tyler founded Zygmunt-Murtie Funeral and Cremation Service to serve the needs of his native Warwick Valley Community. Shortly following, on October 10, 2017 Tyler expanded the Zygmunt-Murtie brand by purchasing the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Homes at the retirement of long-time owners Stephen and Ferne Flaxman. While this was not an “originally planned” business venture, Tyler could not be happier with the path that each of the three locations is currently operating on. He truly believes in quality and affordable service, right down to the most minor detail.
In May of 2018 Tyler received a Bachelor of Science in Emergency and Disaster Management from SUNY Canton College of Technology. This in turn works hand in hand with his second career as a Medicolegal Death Investigator for the Rockland County Medical Examiner’s Office in Pomona.
In October 2023 Tyler was blessed to purchase the former Strong-Basile Funeral Home. Strong’s has a long-standing history of service to both the Town of Warwick and Village of Greenwood Lake. Though now re-branded Zygmunt-Murtie, Tyler hopes to continue the legacy of fair, honest, and affordable service set forth by the Strong, Basile and Ingrassia families.
When not working- Tyler can be found deep in the woods on his ATV or singing along with the local church choir.
