George T. Foley, a long-time resident of the area passed away on Saturday September 24, 2016. George was born in Amityville, New York on September 27, 1937 to the late George and Helen (McCarthy) Foley, and was raised along with his sister Martha in Massapequa Park, New York.
George enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Germany for 3 years as an “M.P.”. After serving in the military, George married his wife, Kathryn (Buckley) in 1964 and moved to Orange County to join the New York State Police. After retiring from the State Police, George was a building contractor and a developer of a land project in New Hampshire. An avid sportsman, George, enjoying traveling, sailing, golf, fly fishing, tennis, having his pilot’s license and hiking with his grandchildren. George was also respected and admired within his community and was known to always lend a helping hand when it was needed. “Everybody needs a George” was an often used phrase.
Most important to George was his family. Survivors include his wife Kathy; daughter Karen Blizard and her husband Jeffrey; son Kevin Foley and his wife Geri; daughter Laura Field and her husband David; his grandchildren, Philip and his wife Tamara, Meghan, Jack, Sophia, Matthew and Phineas; his beloved sister Martha Shaw and her husband Vincent, his brother-in-law’s Ken Buckley and his wife Rosemary and John and MaryAnn Buckley. George was also blessed with many loving nieces and nephews and an incredible amount of friends.
He was predeceased by his sister-in-law Lin Schumann and her husband Robert.
George’s grandchildren brought him the most joy and he climbed many mountain tops, went to many swim meets, baseball, basketball, LAX, tennis and soccer games proudly supporting his beloved grandchildren and enjoying the time together. He left behind a lifetime of memories and a legacy of love for his family to treasure.
Mass of Christian Burial be celebrated on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 10:00AM at St. Mary’s Church, 42 Goshen Ave, Washingtonville, NY. Burial with full military honors will immediately follow at the Orange County Veteran’s Cemetery, 111 Craigville Road, Goshen. Those wishing to attend the military service should arrive at the cemetery at 11:00AM.
